Brand Story

On this page

Taotaob began with a drawer of freshwater pearls that a factory would have rejected.

They were baroque — irregular, faintly ridged, no two the same shape. Machines want pearls that are round and identical; these were none of those things. We thought they were the most beautiful ones in the room.

That drawer became the whole idea: jewelry shouldn't come out of a mould looking like everybody else's. It should look like it was made for one person — because it was.

Made with an artisan's patience. Made entirely by hand. Made for the one person who isn't a copy — you.

Made with patience

Our work starts long before a piece takes shape. Pearls and gemstones are sorted by hand, one at a time — matched by tone, by lustre, by the way a surface catches light. A strand is laid out, taken apart and laid out again until the proportions feel right. Not because a specification says so, but because a person looking at it says so.

This is the part that cannot be rushed, and we don't try to. We would rather make fewer pieces and finish them properly.

Made by hand, step by step

Every piece passes through a bench, not a production line:

  • Selecting — freshwater pearls and natural gemstones are picked and matched one by one, so a piece reads as a set without being identical.
  • Drilling & stringing — each bead is drilled and threaded by hand; the cord is chosen for how the piece will actually be worn.
  • Knotting — pearl strands are knotted bead by bead, so the strand moves softly and beads never grind against each other.
  • Setting & wiring — sterling silver clasps, findings and wire work are shaped and closed by hand.
  • Finishing — the piece is cleaned, polished, checked end to end, then packed.

We work in small batches. A piece gets made because the material asked for it, not because a calendar did.

For the one who isn't a copy

A baroque pearl has one shape. A piece of aquamarine has one cloud inside it. Agarwood has one grain. When the material is natural, the piece cannot be duplicated — and that is exactly the point.

Two necklaces from the same design will sit differently on the collarbone. Two bracelets catch the light at different angles. We treat that as the signature of the piece, not a defect. If you are looking for something nobody else will be wearing, this is how it happens.

The materials we trust

  • Freshwater pearls — mostly baroque and near-baroque: irregular, lustrous, warm against the skin.
  • Natural gemstones — aquamarine, garnet, moonstone, yellow tower quartz and blue lace agate, chosen for colour rather than uniformity.
  • Sterling silver — findings, clasps and hand-shaped wire work.
  • Agarwood — paired with pearls in our vintage-style sets for its quiet, resinous warmth.

Caring for handmade jewelry

  • Put jewelry on last, after perfume, hairspray and lotion.
  • Keep it away from chlorine, salt water and long soaking.
  • Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wearing; store pieces separately in a pouch so stones don't scratch each other.
  • Pearls like to be worn — natural skin moisture keeps them from drying out.
  • Sterling silver slowly darkens in air; a polishing cloth brings it straight back.
